Description

Around the year 600, the Maya village of Joya de Cerén was buried like Pompeii. In 1976 it was rediscovered during preparation for an agricultural project and since then it has provided a wealth of archeological information about the common Maya. The level of preservation is beyond what is seen in Italy with one plaster cast of a cavity having such fine detail you could see the hairs on an ear of corn. However, no bodies have ever been found. This illustration puts a fantasy twist on what the bodies could’ve been like, had the people who lived there been forced to stay behind rather than evacuate.
